Beacon is famous because of the Dia:Beacon - for those interested in contemporany art – and the art galleries located on Main Street. Here is a little show of what happened upstate New York. If you visit New York City, if you have a little bit of time, if you have been living in th city and want to see something different from the Empire State Building or the Financial District, if you want to see a real american town, go to Grand Central Station, take a train to Beacon ($24 round trip) and enjoy the beauty of nature and the architecture of american town.

Mi protesta, en silencio, no es porque los hombres tengamos una miniplanta en las mega tiendas de ropa, si no porque librerías, tiendas de música y video están cerrando para dar paso a tiendas de ropa…como si ni hubieran. Los tiempos cambian, ya no nos tiramos horas entre los pasillos de Rock, Pop, Jazz, Action, Drama, Documental, sino en los probadores pensando: Me queda bien? Me hace el culo gordo, se me ven las chichas…el amarillo y el fucsia no pegan…y pasamos la tarjeta y llenamos el armario con ropa que al año siguiente está pasada de moda y otra vez algo nuevo…

No digo que esté bien ni mal, es lo que el público pide, y la voz del pueblo es la voz de Alá, Dios y el Chapulín Colorado (para que nadie se sienta ofendido). Ya no se compran cds, ni dvds, se bajan – a ver como le va al blueray – los libros se compran por internet y te llegan a casa. Ya no espacios públicos ni vitrinas para ellos… La ropa, en cambio, no es tan facil de bajar por azureus o el e-mule y como al final miramos marca y no calidad – al contrario de lo que hacemos con el sonido de la música o la calidad de imagen de las péliculas que nos bajamos…a todo esto esto, yo compro todas mis películas y descargo todos mis cds – parece que la batalla del marketing y el “ser alguien” = imagen cada vez gana más terreno. Cada vez se ven por las calles más maniquies andantes…No les ha pasado que parece que han visto a la misma persona 100 veces? Aquel verano de Madrid y las camisetas de lunares??? Y aquel otro con las sandalias de telita…las de colores…o el de la mochila quimabaya, que pasó de hippie a patriota y hasta fashion?

En un futuro, no muy lejano, tal vez mañana y hasta hoy, pero yo hablo a escala universal, las avenidas del mundo serán escaparates gigantes con fotos de modelos y modelas, imágenes de los dioses y las diosas del Olimpo retocadas con photoshop, bañados en aceite, saldremos a caminar a contemplar la belleza y perfección de aquellos cuerpos a quienes intentamos emular usando lo que ellos usan…Ya no veremos el lanzamiento del último cd de U2…bueno de U2 si…pero en cambio siempre nos recordarán que ya viene la próxima temporada…y por fin, al final, el hombre estará hecho a imagen y semejanza de sus ídolos….

Y como diría Humphrey: Siempre nos quedará Paris…o más bien…Sólo nos quedará Paris…

Nota Importantísima: Si viajan a NY antes de Abril aprovechen, todo esta del 30 al 50% de descuento en Virgin Store Times Square…yo estuve ayer y vaya tela!!! Si se les ofrece algo, dinero en cuenta y se los compro…Y nos vemos en la apertura de Forever 21…que además el nombre de la tienda es cutre y malo…Por Siempre 21, parece título de película romanticona o road trip de tías donde podría salir Drew Barrimore y Cámeron Diaz…a lo Never Been Kissed

Zack Snyder o como dice el poster que hay en cada esquina de NY, el visionario (cuidado!…. “el visionario”) director de 300, que para mi fue aún peor decepción, tiene el mérito de crear unas secuencias e imagenes ídenticas a las del comic que no defraudarán a ningún fan o cualquiera que se haya leido el libro…(Para quienes no lo sepan, Watchmen es un cómic o novela gráfica publicada en 1986)

Pero…(Si ya está el PERO) la película de Watchmen es otra prueba de lo dificil que es adaptar un cómic al cine. La narrativa de ambos géneros es distinta. El inicio de Watchem en la novela es puro suspense, en la pelicula se hace largo y poco emotivo, la secuencia del asesinato de “The Comedian” con esta nueva moda de ralentizar la acción, convierte la secuencia en algo descriptivo y no en una buena secuencia de acción, que deberia ser rápida, como las que hace Nolan en Batman. Seguramente Synder lo hace con la intención del capturar la percepción del tiempo que se tiene al leer un cómic o una novela, pero en el cine, las acciones de este tipo son rápidas…no estamos hablando de una película a lo “Elephant” de Gus Van Sant sino de WATCHMEN!! HEROES, ACCIÓN, MOVIMIENTO…Synder se queda en la contemplación…entonces la película nunca termina de arrancar. Que era lo bueno de “Lethal Weapon” o “Die Hard”…la acción, rápida, instantanea….Que es lo bueno de “Gladiator”? la acción rápida…Es el lenguage del cine…En Matrix quedó muy bonito lo de frenar las secuencias…pero ya está bien.

Entonces, si el inicio es dificil de digerir – y yo creo que el principal problema está aquí – lo que queda todavía es muy largo. La historia de Watchmen es muy compleja, pero no por la trama en si, sino por que la novela, se detiene mucho en la vida de cada uno de los personajes, dedica páginas enteras a ello, y la película al intentar adaptar fielmente la narrativa del cómic, descuida la trama principal generando una serie de altibajos que dan la sensación de que no vas a ningún lado, de que la historia no avanza. Estás en la trama, y vas a la vida de Dr. Manhattan, y luego vuelves, y luego vas pa otro lado…ah cierto! esto va de una movida nuclar, no pero Rorschach, ojo con Manhattan..ping, pong, ping pong, PLASH!! Se acabó la peli. En una historia tan coral no te da tiempo ha pensar ni en los personajes ni en lo que está pasando…

Y eso que Snyder se dejó varias cosas por fuera…como el calamar gigante…en fin…y que decir del tigre de Ozimandias, una decepción. Es de esas cosas que dan la impresión de: Esto lo hicieron ya al final. Estaban hasta los guevos y dijeron: Bah! ni se nota…Pues si!! Canta demasiado que es digital, y yo, personalmente tenia ganas de verlo. Entonces ya cuando empiezas a quitar cosas de una novela y la cagas con otras, todo cogea. Ya hablaré de  Ozymandias.

La carga política de la historia se pierde y el contexto parece un chiste. La Guerra Fría ya es historia, y como dice A. O. SCOTT del NYTimes, da la impresión de que Watchmen fue una novela de su tiempo…la amenaza nuclear ya no existe lo que reduce la filosofía de la peli al mero plano de la ficción, que en ocasiones, y esto me duele decirlo, se hace ridícula. Si, ridícula.

La escena de sexo…que en el cómic es buena, porque es el cómic, en la pantalla grande es un “hazme reir” pero un HAZME REIR MUCHO MUCHO MUCHO, POR FAVOR ME DESCOJONO…A lo más cutre de los 80s…con el HALLELUJAH de Leonard Cohen y la ráfaga de fuego al final como analogía del orgasmo…No me jodas…faltó la bola de cristal…y Disco Stu…Sin duda el peor momento…

Pero bueno, he decir que la peli no es que sea mala, no. No es eso que dices, joder que mala es, no…es como esos kebabs que te comes y dices, bueno, no esta bueno pero sabe a Kebab.

Y después de meterme con la peli…lo bueno. Los actores pegan y lo hacen muy bien todos…excepto Ozimandias que a mi me parece un poco debil para ser el malo malo…en el comic es en plan el tio mas inteligente del mundo, manga, guapo y cabrón…aqui parece un niñato, hijo de papi, que quiere salvar al mundo. No me convence…J0der además en el comic ese personaje estaba basado en JULIO IGLESIAS y su porte (físicamente claro, Ozimandias no canta) y aqui parece ENRIQUE o peor…en plan “I wanna be your hero, baby“ (Ojo al video de Heroe de QUIQUE Iglesias…sale Mickey Rourke…) Este Ozimandias debería estar en MILK.

El BUHO es clavado, pero clavado es perfecto… y RORSCHACH y THE COMEDIAN sin duda los mejores, las secuencias de estos dos le ponen emoción a la historia porque de resto no la tiene. La mejor secuencia es aquella de: WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE AMERICAN DREAM? and The Comedian says: …YOU ARE LIVING THE AMERICAN DREAM…Sin duda es una pena que la peli cojee porque tiene momentazos como este…o el DO YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT RORSCHACH…I’LL TELL YOU ABOUT RORSCHACH…

DR. MANA ATAN (como dirian los amigos franceses) convence…aprovado…nostálgico y hopeless… Las chicas mmmm…muy buenas…tanto madre e hija…Sobre todo Silk Spectre madre… buenos papeles y buenas las dos…

y el score de Tyler Bates genial……….la canción de Phillip Glass es la misma que uso en KOYAANISQATSI (1982) y aquí dejo este link de una versión que hizo un freaky en el GTA…vale la pena… pero como esto no es una exposición de arte, ni una clase de fotografía sino una cuestión de contar o no contar bien la historia yo me quedo con el comic… por ahora… habrá que hacer un segundo visionado y ver si mejora la crítica. Vayan y véanla a ver que tal les parece, sobretodo si no han leido el libro…si no les gusta la peli tiene un problema y si les gusta entonces el problema puede ser mio, porque las 2Horas y 40 minutos estuve pensando en cual sería mi impresión si no conociera la historia de antemano: Pensaría que esto es ridículo, o sería capaz de meterme en la trama? no sé…GO WATCH THEM AND FEEDBACK!!!

Todos los años me pasa lo mismo. Días antes de la entrega de los premios me empieza a entrar esa horrible corazonada de: MMMM..aqui va a haber tongo. Este año decidi hacer una apuesta con mi novia y mi compañera de piso. 30 dolares. Bueno, no está mal…confiaba en mi conocimiento, en la estela de premios que se venian dando y un poco en el corazón.

Empecemos con Slumdog Millionaire. Tal vez fui yo, díganmelo ustedes, pero yo me enteré de la existencia de esta peli un mes antes de los Oscar. INCREIBLE. Por lo que seguí en los medios, el ascenso de la película de Boyle fue peor que el de la espuma, pero más que justo. Hablando con un amigo estuvimos de acuerdo en que el principio es igual al de “Ciudad de Dios”, que es otra gran película, sin embargo el desarrollo y el contexto de la historia es tan universal – todos hemos visto Quien quiere ser millonario, hasta el padre de una exnovia estuvo en el programa…mira tú – que la empatía que se crea con el personaje de Jamel es casi instantanea. Más allá del tecnisísmo, Slumdog lo tiene todo: Niños, amor imposible, suspense, violencia, sexo – no explícito – dinero, armas, odio, el gordo gracioso, paisajes, colores…etc. Es perfecta en su género, y aunque estoy de acuerdo con este mismo amigo en que el final es demasiado cliché…todos queremos que sea así. De Danny Boyle no digo nada…este Oscar estaba pendiente desde Trainspotting… y punto. No acepto comentarios.

El Oscar de Kate Winslet como Mejor Actriz era obvio y merecido. Aunque no me he visto la peli (The Reader), la gente con la que he hablado, y de la que me fio, aprueba el Oscar, eso si, dejando en claro que Doña Streep siempre será la ganadora. Ambas mujeres se lo merecen. Son protagonistas, hacen un buen papel, y bajo un leve análisis de: Bueno, Winslet no tiene Oscar, y Streep tiene dos y ademas quince nominaciones, pues venga, vamos a dárselo…. Vale, ok, d’accord, guanchihu (eso es mandarín)…en fin, todos felices.

Del Oscar como Mejor Actor de Reparto para Heath “THE JOKER” Ledger, que se puede decir…”pos” nada. El mejor…hasta me cabrea que se haya muerto el hombre…no habrá más Joker nunca más…y si intentan poner a otro, nos opondremos!!!!

Muy bien. Mejor Actriz de Reparto y Mejor Actor Protagonista.

Primero Mejor Actor Protagonista. Siguiendo la lógica de los premios, muchos nos preguntamos porqué Mickey Rourke no se llevó la estatuilla. Si Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz, The Joker y Slumdog habian ganado sus respectivos galardones en todas las demás galas, al igual que Mickey Rourke, cómo es posible que tan sabia y prediscible lógica se rompa con Sean Penn? Yo creo, que aquí ha habido tongo. Y lo peor es que lo sabía. Empecemos con el background: El año pasado el mismo día de las elecciones presidenciales en Estados Unidos, en el estado de California se votó en contra de una Ley que aprobaba el matrimonio homosexual. Sean Penn interpreta a Harvey Milk, el primer político abiertamente gay de California y quien fue asesinado en San Francisco durante finales de la década de los 70s. Ahora bien, seguro muchos ya habrán hecho el vínculo entre pélicula y realidad, nada mejor que una buena campaña publicitaria como Los Oscars para que Milk – que es buena película – sea vista por más gente con el fin de generar más conciencia entre la población de California (y fuera) e intentar pasar la Ley más adelante.

Mi Oscar era para Mickey, y no por los premios recibidos como lógica para que le dieran el Oscar, sino porque realmente el personaje es conmovedor.

El otro premio que, después de ver las películas, huele a tongo es el de Penélope Cruz. VickyCristinaBarcelona es una pelicula que se acerca a lo peor que ha hecho Woody Allen en mucho tiempo, sobretodo porque deja en claro que este señor fuera de New York no puede contar historias. La película, que consiguió financiación de MediaPro y tal vez sea esta la única razón por la que se llame VickyCristinaBarcelona, se hubiese podido llamar: VickyCristinaBogotá, VickyCristinaShangai, VickyCristinaMumbai o cualquier ciudad que se les ocurra. No refleja el ambiente, ni la personalidad de Barcelona. La misma historia de siempre con Woody Allen…su “reflejo” de la clase burguesa…No hay nada más incoherente en VCB que Bardem como el “pintor bohemio” que tiene un jet privado…desde cuando? si esto existe, por favor quiero conocerlo… En cualquier caso Penelope hace un gran papel, eso es cierto, lo mejor de la peli sin duda alguna pero tampoco para un Oscar. Penélope sale 15 minutos, mientras que la otra favoria Amy Adams, sale toda la pelicula (The Doubt) y hace una magnífica interpretación. Sin embargo, es aquí donde entra la lógica de los premios previamente recibidos y la promoción de la actriz por parte de Harvey Weinstein, fundador de la Miramax y cuya participación en el Oscar de “P” se entiende mejor en este artículo de El País. No digo más.

En el resto de premios no tengo críticas, tal vez por Wall-E que no se llevó ni mezcla ni edición de Sonido y que se los merecía porque ya que casi no se habla en la pelicula, es un mérito generar la emoción y el dramatismo logrado.

Así son estos premios y todos… los seguimos y los vemos porque son graciosos, entretenidos y a todos nos gusta la competencia, por que las actrices están buenorras pero sabiendo que no siempre se premia al mejor ni a la mejor…ni a la más guapa…PA TI MARISA!!!

Wolf: Ok, relax, relax. First of all, the most important is to define the living standards of the poor. The most important standards for the “poor”, and not only for them but for everybody, are health, life expectancy, nourishment and education, and it has clearly increased (Wolf 2005, 139). Look for example in the developing world. Life expectancy has risen nine years in a period of thirty years. Most important, infant mortality have fallen from 107 to only fifty-eight in the same period of time. Half of what it used to be! Isn’t that amazing? (Wolf, 164)

Scholte: Very nice, but this is about equality as well. What about Brazil? Over there, in the early 1990s, the richest people used to gain 26 times more money than the poorest. And even worst, beginning the twenty-first century, while 7.7 million superrich held more than $1 million in financial assets, other 2.2 billion people lived with less than $2 a day. (Scholte 2005, 322)

Stiglitz: But that’s not amazing. I have seen how globalization has benefited developed countries, instead of creating equality. At two of the biggest organizations that should help equality among countries, I’m talking about the IMF and the World Bank, the voting rights are allocated according to economic power and not by population. The countries’ representatives are bankers and finance ministers and not officials with broader outlooks and concerns. The people who are really affected by policies are barely audible in such meetings. (Stiglitz, 2001)

Scholte: Sure. Policymakers have pursued liberalization, stabilization, deregulation, privatization and fiscal policies without looking at issues of social justice. (Scholte, 323)

Wolf: But social justice comes with globalization. Look at China. It is much better now than fifty years ago. Why? Because they changed policies. Under Mao economic freedom was impossible. When they joined liberalization and trade policies the country changed. The volume of exports in China has being rising every year. In 2000 it rose 44 percent (Wolf, 144). Which developed country has seen such increasing? None. The country is richer, and if the country is richer the people too

Stiglitz: Because Chinese economy interested developed countries. But what about a country like Ethiopia? The IMF suspended its aid even if it was showing great results in stabilizing the budget, just because they were worried about the role of foreign aid in the government’s budget. Meles Zenawi, first prime minister of Ethiopia at that time, proposed a flexible spending to the IMF, but they didn’t agree. So, is it globalization for everybody or just for some? (Stiglitz, 2001)

Wolf: Well, I do not know about Ethiopia and its problems with the IMF. The fact is that countries like China and some in Asia have seen great increasing in his societies. In Africa first you have to look at governments, it is not globalization but corruption what keeps the continent in a continuous delicate situation. (Wolf, 146) The problem is that you have to difference between inequality among the countries and within the countries. It is clear that among the countries differences have decreased, as I told you. It all depends on how each government administrates the country toward better policies, which fit with the markets, and then you will see decreasing in poverty and inequality. (Wolf, 141)

Scholte: Yeah, but then you are assuming that all economies are the same; that all economies have the same capacity. You cannot compare an economy based on manufacture as the Chinese, and an economy based on agriculture as the Colombian.

Wolf: Well, of course. And is there where the policies must change, from an agricultural to a manufactures’ based economy.

Scholte: That’s not the point. The point is that they must compete with what they have, but it would be impossible as long as developed countries keep the subsidies in their agricultural industries, and as long as regimes as the WTO keep pushing towards a liberalization on areas that benefit the rich countries such as manufactures and intellectual property. (Scholte, 331) This gap in competition policies is what keeps countries far from equality.

Wolf: Maybe you are right, some policies have been pursued in the wrong direction, but it is also true that there have been economies beneficiated by those policies. Countries in Asia have seen benefits with big companies investing in their countries. Even for Bangladesh, which was considered the poorest country in Asia, has seen an increasing of inward direct investment. In 1990 was only $150 million while in 2001 it reached $1.1 billion.  It is only the start, but at least. (Wolf, 146)

Stiglitz: Ok, guys, this is a long conversation. Scholte, you can say that inequality has increased because of the loss of exports due to the competition; that this has a direct consequence in education cuts, therefore that countries have experienced a deterioration in public education, which increases the gap within societies because the rich will pay private schools and the poor will have a lack of education (Scholte, 322 – 323). And you Wolf will answer with data, saying that if you look at east Asia female illiteracy have decreased 10 points from 1990 to 2001 and the same in South Asia (Wolf, 164). So, as both have arguments in favor and against some globalization policies this is a never-ending discussion.  Lets go, have a coffee and maybe we can continue this conversation some other day.

But since most of people have children because they want to and not because they have to, is their responsibility to focus on their education, to learn them to think about what they do since the beginning, to give them the freedom to think, and since the teachers are teachers because they want to, it is also their responsibility to teach students to have a critical thinking, to get involved in students’ education and never do it as an obligation as happens many times. Presidents and congressman have important duties out there but the most important job in this world is to being parent and teacher because the future of everybody depends on you.

Only through the basic techniques of repetition and imitation thinks could be totally different. If children learn the language through this why can’t students do the same? I do not know in this country, but something that I would always thought would have been great when I was a child was having reading classes. I am pretty sure that if since you are child there would be a storytelling-reading class children would become much more interested in reading and in books in general.

But this does not happen, and reading becomes an obligation, therefore something boring, as happens with writing. It is only, and only through reading that we can learn rules, grammar, and spelling. Students can then take one hundred of “fill in the gaps” exercises and success, but then they have to practice because if not all you learn will be forgotten. It happened to me. I use to speak and write very good French and then, after I left France I never spoke it again nor writing. Right now I remember half of what I learned and I cannot write half of what I used to do.

No matter how many English classes students take, if they do not read, then they won’t memorize the rules. It is repetition. Bukowski, Carter, Marquez, Whitman, Borges, Tolstoy, Hemingway, all of them will tell you than the only way to learn how to write is reading and writing, not going to language classes. That would help but it is not the whole.

The human brain is so amazing that you don’t have to force it, it learn things even if you do not notice it, but only through practice. If a soccer player does not practice, he will forget how to play well. If we do not read, our brain will just keep the basic grammar, the obvious spelling so it can communicate basic thoughts but nothing more.

So if students arrive there to class without having read, not only the required reading to their classes but the masters of literature how can teachers and professors except to have perfect and coherent essays if these students don’t even know the language they are speaking?

Two different processes and practices compose writing. You can’t write something “good” and coherent if you haven’t been taught to think by yourself in advance, and this is something that can be teach and learned. Writing is just an extension of our capacity of thinking and of our language. It is just the visual form of our thoughts. Thus, writing classes are useless if people don’t know how to think on their own.

Generalization is something you cannot do, but I am about to do it. I’m just going to try to use dialectic.

In most of the classes I have took in my life the amount of students who remain silent during the debates that are proposed is always more than the students who participate. I have arrived to the conclusion that there are just two possibilities. The first is that the student hadn’t read the assignments. If this is the case the student obviously don’t know what the rest of the class is because he or she has not the background. This student remain in the ignorance and then he became just a being who is absorbing what the other people say but he cannot participate, he cannot think because he has nothing to compare with, therefore he cannot say anything about it.

Then there is a critical point where the student either decides to change his attitude or that the student remains as passive as until now and then this is what happens: The student stop thinking by himself, he keep absorbing the information from his classmates and learning their thoughts but he is not creating his own. This is dangerous, very dangerous because students become sheep which can be lead by anyone with a little of information. Thus these students arrive to any class, the teacher asks them to write any thought and they are not able to do it, because they don’t have thoughts.

This is funny because it is always the students fault; or at least that’s what teachers say. But not…it is their fault. The fact that students don’t like to read and write is their fault.

At school teachers ask you to write essays on subjects that you don’t care. Let’s face it…when you are at school the last thing you want to do is basically that, being at school. So, why don’t teachers ask students to write for example about what they would like to be doing instead of being at school? I’m sure a thousand of good examples would emerge from those lazy brains. Teachers, in their aim to be “good teachers” think that the most complicated subject, the best essay, or the best paper. FALSE. Let’s make the kids and girls write about their lives, about girls and boys, about the fights they had, about the soccer game, about love, about friends, about stupid stuff. Put them a film and then make them write about it. Make them read the book they want and then make them write about it. In the school they teach a lot about battles and dates but they do not teach about thinking, about feeling.

If you don’t feel I hardly think you could write…What did you feel when you kick his ass? And then you will find anger, pleasure, pain…

But this hardly happens and instead, when you arrive to class, there are kinds of teachers you could find: The first teacher is the one that believes he or she is some kind of god, this is the worst, and he or she will try to show you how much he knows and how good he is. This is the one who ask you to read “El Quijote” when you are 15 years. The second is the monster… you finish hating the class. This kind of teacher usually hates what he is doing, and that’s why he reacts like that. He is frustrated and just want to make your life worst than his. This is the one that ask you to read 30 books in two months. At the end you hate reading, you hate writing. You ask yourself…why is it wrong if he asked me what I thought about it? I put what I thought about the book…but the teacher says it is wrong…either because he is too good to accept students’ thoughts or because he is so frustrated that only want you to repeat it….yes, it is like this.

Because of this kind of teachers is why happens what happens and that students arrive to college without anything to say, because nobody has asked them what do they think about their lives but about others’. Please future teachers, do not make the same mistakes our politicians and teachers made with us…
